Donation Totals

At the end of our August Community Work Day, we donated 16 handmade blankets in the form of: 6 quilts, 2 afghans, and 3 receiving blankets. We also donated 2 pillowcases, 1 pair of booties, 4 stuffed animals, and a ball.

Since October of 2008 we’ve donated 543 blankets. This includes: 287 handmade quilts, 90 hand-knitted/crocheted afghans, 76 handmade fleece blankets, 29 small handmade receiving blankets, and 2 summer-weight coverlets. The remainder were purchased or used blankets. We’ve also received a small mountain of stuffed animals, toys, clothes, and household items which have been passed along to the kind folks residing at HOPE Community.

Thank you to everyone in the Tallahassee Community who help to make this possible.

2nd Annual Garage Sale
(fabric, sewing, patterns, arts, crafts, hobby supplies)
We’ve received donations of beautiful fabrics and notions that aren’t suitable for quilt making. So, we’re having a yard sale to make room for more donations and to raise a little money for our cause. Since we’re taking the time to have a sale, we’d like it to be worth our our customer’s time. So, we could use more stuff. If you have any D.I.Y. supplies that are just hanging around gathering dust, we’d love to have them. And don’t forget to come attend the sale. You don’t know what treasures you might find there.

Donations may be dropped of at the Goodwill Attended Donation Center on Tharpe at Old Bainbridge. Please tell the attendant that the items are for Sew for HOPE. If you need more personal attention, please contact Cynthia 556-1215 or Peggy 893-5521.

Yard Sale Date and Location
October 8th, 2011 8 a.m. until noon.
Killearn Lakes Area
3357 Barrow Hill Trail

More Information about this Goodwill Location
We have a “kit pick-up” spot at this Goodwill for those who can’t make it to our work days but would like to take a project home to work on. The “kit rack” is a tall, skinny silver, basket-type shelving unit in the far right corner of the far right room. That’s the cutting room with the two 6′ tables, ironing boards, and no other shelves. All kits have instructions, but we encourage you to use your own creativity as well.

Volunteers are also welcome to stop by and “shop” for free fabric in our fabric room. As long as that cloth is being put into a quilt or blanket for HOPE Community children, we encourage you to do that. Fabric can cost upwards of $10 a yard now, so we’re happy to share our bounty.

All Sew for HOPE donations may be dropped off, at this Goodwill location only, any day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Donations need to be clearly marked “Sew for HOPE” so they are not confused with Goodwill donations. Also, please state to the attendant that they are for Sew for HOPE.

If at all possible, please make sure that fabric suitable for quilting has been freshly laundered.

Thank you to Brooke Lachore and Goodwill Industries of the Big Bend.
They provide the work and storage space for us at 1108 W Tharpe St. It feels absolutely fabulous to have a home.

Wish List
Yarn! We need soft baby yarn in pretty colors. Do you get JoAnn’s fliers with the coupons? Do you have enough yarn already but would love to shop for more? Is your husband going to kill you if you bring one more skein into the house? Browse, touch, admire, drool, purchase, then give it to Sew for HOPE. Believe me, you won’t feel guilty about this purchase. And I bet your husband won’t kill you either.

We need someone to make fabric labels to be stitched onto the backs of our quilts so the children who receive them know where they came from. If you have an embroidery machine or sewing machine with an alphabet feature, please consider volunteering in this way.

Sew for HOPE Volunteer Opportunities Other than Sewing
We always need individuals willing to launder donated fabric.

Do you like to cut fabric? We would love to give you a bundle of coordinating fabric and have you cut it into strips for incorporation into Courthouse Steps Quilt Blocks. You don’t have to sew it, just cut it.

We need a volunteer to head up fund raising. This is not a big job since most of what we deal in is “goods”. We use donated fabric and volunteer labor to make quilts and blankets for homeless children. But we still need to purchase consumables such as sewing and office supplies.

We need a volunteer to sell fabric the 1st Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. – noon.

Supplies Needed
Spray-on basting adhesive, Fray-Check, crochet hooks, scale for weighing fabric, liquid laundry detergent, and Oxi-Clean.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter, please share it with others who may be interested.
